Two Slammers players, Aurora Pemper from Boston, MA (left), and Elise Berger from Burlington, VT (right), were honored to have been chosen to participate in a new baseball tournament sponsored by USA Baseball and Major League Baseball.
The tournament was based in the greater Los Angeles area and built around Jackie Robinson Day. 96 girls from more than 20 states and Canada were given an unprecedented opportunity to participate in the inaugural Trailblazer Series. The event took place over four days and included competitive play, instruction, community outreach, and a visit with the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.
The event included two divisions: 16-and-under and 12-and-under. The girls had the opportunity to be coached and instructed by some of the nation’s top female baseball players, including Team USA alumnae.
The weekend’s most esteemed guests, however, were two of the original trailblazers: former All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) players Shirley “Hustle” Burkovich and Maybelle “Mae” Blair.
