The Boston Slammers is an all-girls baseball travel team, made up of girls ages 9-18, from Boston neighborhoods including Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, Hyde Park, Roxbury, South End, and even as far as Vermont and Cape Cod.  Most of the girls play in the co-ed baseball divisions of the Regan Youth League and other leagues around the Boston area.  They have come together over the past two years to strengthen their skills, scrimmage with other teams and play the sport they love. The Slammers offer these girls a unique opportunity to be just a baseball player – not “the girl on the team.”

The Slammers was organized by the parents of some of these girls, in response to a growing desire by their daughters to have more chances to play organized baseball against other girls.  Over the years parents noticed many more girls playing baseball, and found that sometimes the girls were overlooked on the baseball field or felt conflicted as they perceived baseball to be a boy’s sport.  They also noticed that there were many competitive travel opportunities for boys, but girls rarely formed part of those teams.  Parents reached out to different baseball leagues and brought many of these girls together to work on improving their abilities and confidence, and to give them an opportunity to play with other girls with similar interests. The girls are serious, dedicated and welcome the opportunity for extra playing time. They also laugh and develop strong ties as they share their stories of what it is like to play with all boys.

In addition to arranging regular weekly practices, parents have also organized scrimmages and clinics with any other girls’ teams they can find. Currently, the girls are getting ready for their spring baseball seasons, and will also continue to arrange scrimmages with other girls’ teams throughout the Northeast, as well as against co-ed teams. We are grateful to the City of Boston and especially the Boston Center for Children and Families for providing us with indoor practice spaces.

The Boston Slammers is a collaboration with the Jamaica Plain Regan Youth League, a 47-year old independent youth baseball and softball league that serves more than 800 local boys and girls ages 5-18.  Most of the youth who participate in the league are from Jamaica Plain and Roxbury, with significant representation from the surrounding neighborhoods of Roslindale and Mission Hill.  The purpose of this volunteer-run league is to provide the youth of Jamaica Plain and surrounding communities the opportunity to play organized baseball and softball in an open, safe, and friendly environment. The League aspires to foster the discipline and fun that are part of learning a challenging team sport, to encourage a spirit of community among participants from diverse backgrounds who practice and play together, and to promote good sportsmanship and respect for teammates, opponents, coaches, umpires, and the great game of baseball.  This collaboration is a key part of the Regan Youth League’s Girls Play Ball initiative which seeks to recruit and support more girls to play baseball and softball.

The Regan Youth League is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization and will be responsible for managing the money raised by the Boston Slammers and will ensure that 100% of the funds raised go towards supporting the expenses associated with the Baseball for All tournament and the girls baseball program.
